Fruit Tree Mapping

Planning (2007)
(courtesy of Shirley Stonier)

1. Map orchards and heritage trees on Saturna and Tumbo Island.
2. Identify fruit from each tree – by species and name
3. Determine which trees require propagation - and urgency of project
4. Determine what root stock is best for each tree
5. Determine where the new tree is to be placed
6. Keep a log of all actions
7. Determine who has skills on island for identification, pruning and propagation
8. Determine who will give classes on these skills
9. Plan a calendar of general training about food production including tree fruits.
10. Determine if there is a need to have lessons in preserving fruit – freezing, drying, canning, juicing.
11. List equipment required for the above processing and locate is needed

Other:
12. List off-island locations for fruit purchases
13. List locations for off-island buyers (markets on VI etc.)
14. Review history books for references to specific trees (and history) on Saturna (homesteader’s journals etc) or through interviews with long term islanders.
15. Liaison with National Parks re: program to save stock vs. National Parks time lines

Time lines:
Winter : tree locations mapped through land research and interviews
Early spring: pruning sessions
Spring: identification of old trees in bloom in forests
Spring: determination of root stock needs for first year; propagation program determined
Summer: pruning sessions
Fall: identification of fruit – reviewing maps; picking fruit to use in preserving lesson
